The Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change has, on the 6th of September, 2026, conducted a two-day retreat with Technical and Legal representatives from across government sectors at the Fabulous Resort at York Village in Freetown.
The purpose of the Technical engagement is for representatives from across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to evaluate, clarify and adopt the Climate Bill for Sierra Leone.
The engagement is also part of the government’s effort to enhance transparency and accountability to the people of Sierra Leone on legislative formulations which could reduce poverty, enhance economic growth and protect the country’s natural resources.
In his statement, the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Jiwoh Abdulai noted that Sierra Leone hasn’t had a comprehensive law on climate change for the past decades. Sequel to this, he said the Ministry is currently working on a Climate Change Bill for Sierra Leone, which would be taken to Parliament.
Minister Abdulai acknowledged the impact of climate change across cross-sections, including local communities and multiple sectors. He noted that the need for the technical sessions after the initial nationwide consultations is crucial for MDAs to look at the critical issues before handing the draft Bill to the Attorney General’s office.
He disclosed that the Bill is seeking to put a framework together for a climate resilience economy, ensure climate action is locally led, and start putting together mitigation actions, including a carbon framework which could follow the Climate Act itself.
The Minister of Environment and Climate Change said the climate legislation could serve as a guide and also speak for Sierra Leone in terms of its response to climate change.
