*The Deputy Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Launches the ‘Go Circular’ Week-2026.*
The Deputy Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Mima Yema Mimi Sobba Stephens has officially inaugurated the Go Circular Week-2026 with a focus on promoting a plastic-free environment and sustainable waste management practices. The launching ceremony was done in collaboration with Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs followed by a high energy ‘Walk for Action’ originated at the headquarters of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, and concluded at the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs with the aim to sustain the momentum of the Go Circular Week, and to draw attention to the urgent need for collective actions in addressing the aging plastic pollution.
This initiative was organized in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Economic Diversification Project (SLeDP), the Resilient Urban Sierra Leone Projects (RUSLP), with support from the World Bank, and PROBLUE.
Delivering her statement, the Deputy Minister, Hon. Mima Yema Mimi Sobba Stephens emphasized the importance of protecting the environment through responsible waste management practices. She noted that the event served as a profound reminder for collective steps among citizens which could lead to significant national transformation in disposal of plastic waste, and adopt recycling practices, and reusable materials wherever possible. She further underscored the value of converting organic waste into useful products like fertilizer to support agriculture, while safeguarding Sierra Leone’s preston beaches and communities.
The Deputy Minister acknowledged the consequences of poor waste management, noting that improperly discarded refuse is currently blocking drainage systems and polluting the oceans. She alluded to the potential health risks caused by the ingestion of microplastics associated with plastic contamination in food and water cycles. She specifically called upon youths and students to act as champions and educators to encourage families and friends to inculcate the idea of reusing, reducing, and recycling plastics.
The launching ceremony was climaxed by visitation at the Kingtom dumpsite, where a live demonstration of green actions was conducted by the Premier Enviro Solutions company, showcasing ongoing efforts to transform plastic waste into repurposed durable products such as bricks, contributing to environmental protection and sustainable development.
